Mount Kenya tours at a glance
Tours on Mount Kenya fall into three groups: short walks from a gate, multi-day guided treks and trips that combine the mountain with wildlife viewing around it. Most tours here are walks.
A day hike here usually means walking the first stage of a route and returning. It does not mean reaching a summit in a day. Treks of several days are covered in the trek guide, and the three approaches are compared on the routes page.

Our picks: Mount Kenya day hikes and guided treks
The day hikes from Nairobi reach Old Moses or the Naro Moru side and none of them goes to a summit. If Point Lenana is your goal, take the four-day trek instead, and check on each card whether the park fee is in the price.

Mount Kenya day hike
The walk to Old Moses and other short options.
Old Moses is the first stop on the Sirimon route. It is 9 km from Sirimon Gate, a walk of 3 to 4 hours. That makes it a natural day-walk target, although a tour operator may not offer it as a day trip on your dates. Confirm the return time and the transport with the operator.
Another stage worth knowing is Bandas to Lake Ellis on the Chogoria side. It is about 9 km and 4 hours, with the camp at 3,450 m. It is a stage within a longer trek, not an ordinary day trip.
A day in the park still needs a daily park fee, and a certified guide is expected. See the park fees for the figures.
What a package may include
These items can be part of a package. No tour includes all of them by default.
Transfers
Pickup and drop-off at the gates. Distances from Nairobi are 188 to 210 km, so a transfer is a large part of a short trip.
Nights in huts or camps
Included in some programs, extra in others. Camping is charged per person in the park schedule.
Meals and cook
A cook appears in some packages. Ask what food is carried and when.
Park entry, guide and porter
Park entry is a daily fee that depends on your category. The guide is expected, and a porter is optional.
Always check what the price covers. A low price can leave out the park fee, and a high price can include the whole crew.
Guided multi-day climbs
The tours most visitors actually book.
A guided climb takes you up one route and often down another. A five-day Sirimon to Chogoria program adds an extra night at Shipton's for acclimatising. A crossing also takes 5 to 6 days. The Naro Moru side has shorter programs of 3 to 4 days, with a warning about fast height gain, and a seven-day program starts at Burguret.
Ask four things before you book: which route you go up and down, which night you spend at Shipton's or another high camp, which park fee category the price assumes, and what happens if you need to turn back. Prices can depend on group size. The price per person falls for groups of two and again for groups of three or more. Read the full trek guide for costs and altitude rules.
Mount Kenya safari: what to expect
Wildlife is part of the park, but not the way a savannah reserve works.
The attractions are mountaineering, scenery and wildlife. The wildlife here is a bonus on a walk. Do not expect Big Five sightings or a classic savannah game-drive circuit. Elephants, buffalo, leopards, primates and antelopes live in the wider ecosystem, but seeing them on a trail is never certain. Hyrax live in the higher zones. Read more about animals and plants.
If you want a classic game drive, plan it separately. Ol Pejeta Conservancy near Nanyuki and Aberdare National Park near Nyeri are the neighbouring wildlife destinations, each with its own guide.
How to choose between the options
A short comparison.
| Option | Time | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Day walk to Old Moses | 3 to 4 hours one way | A first taste of the moorland and forest edge |
| Guided multi-day trek | 3 to 7 days | Point Lenana and the high valleys |
| Technical climb | Multi-day | Experienced climbers heading for Batian or Nelion |
| Wildlife trip nearby | One day or more | Game viewing outside the mountain park |
For most visitors with limited time, a short guided walk from a gate or a five to six-day trek are the two practical choices. Climbers considering the peaks can start with Batian and Nelion.
