Mount Kenya history in short

Mount Kenya history begins with the people who lived around the mountain. The Kikuyu and Embu call it Kĩrĩnyaga, and the Meru call it Kîrîmaara. Traditions give more than one meaning for these names. The mountain was never "discovered". It was known and named long before European visitors wrote about it.

The European record starts in 1849, when Johann Ludwig Krapf wrote about seeing the mountain. Batian was first climbed in 1899 and Nelion in 1929. Today the massif is a national park, a forest reserve and a World Heritage site. If you want to walk where those first climbers went, our page on Mount Kenya treks is the place to begin.

Kirinyaga, Kîrîmaara and the first climbs

Local names came first, and the first ascents came much later.

Names and meaning

For Kikuyu and Embu communities the mountain is Kĩrĩnyaga. For the Meru it is Kîrîmaara. Traditions give more than one meaning for these names.

Krapf and Teleki

Johann Ludwig Krapf's 1849 report was a European sighting of a mountain the local communities already knew. Teleki's attempt in 1887 was an early documented try at climbing it.

Batian and Nelion

Batian was first climbed in 1899 and Nelion in 1929. The normal route to Nelion today is not the route of Batian's first ascent. Both peaks remain technical climbs.

The mountain forests and World Heritage

From refuge to protected area.

During the struggle for independence, the mountain forests served as a refuge for the Mau Mau. That history belongs to the forests, not to today's trekking routes. The Mau Mau story is told in more detail in our Aberdare guide.

The UNESCO listing covers the park and forest. The extension in 2013 brought in Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve, which are separate places to visit. For Lewa, see our Samburu guide.

Names from this history appear on today's maps and routes.

Mackinder Valley and camp

The Sirimon route runs through Mackinder Valley, and Mackinder's Camp lies on the Naro Moru route. Halford Mackinder was one of the three men who made the first ascent of Batian in 1899.

Teleki Valley

The Naro Moru route climbs through Teleki Valley on its way to Mackinder's Camp. Teleki made an early documented attempt on the mountain in 1887.

Shipton's Camp

Shipton's Camp is the usual base for the summit day on the Sirimon route. Eric Shipton made the first ascent of Nelion in 1929 with Percy Wyn-Harris.

The forest and the park have two managers: the Kenya Wildlife Service for the national park and the Kenya Forest Service for parts of the forest reserve. Rules for visitors, such as the guide requirement, come from the park side.
