Mount Kenya vs Kilimanjaro in short
Comparing Mount Kenya with Kilimanjaro starts with two summits that are easy to mix up. Kilimanjaro's top is Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m. Mount Kenya's highest point is Batian at 5,199 m, but it is a technical climb. Most trekkers walk to Point Lenana at 4,985 m, which is about 900 m lower than Uhuru Peak.
That height gap is only part of the story. Mount Kenya is a cluster of jagged rock peaks with cirques, tarns and moorland. Kilimanjaro is a volcanic massif rising above the plains. Side-by-side comparison

| Mount Kenya | Kilimanjaro | |
|---|---|---|
| Highest point | Batian, 5,199 m | Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m |
| Usual trekking summit | Point Lenana, 4,985 m | Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m |
| Technical summits | Batian and Nelion (5,188 m), rock climbing | – |
| Landscape | Several rocky peaks, cirques and tarns | One volcanic massif above the surrounding land |
| Main routes | Sirimon, Chogoria, Naro Moru | See the Kilimanjaro guide |
| Trek length offered | 3 to 7 days, 5 days for a Sirimon-Chogoria crossing | See the Kilimanjaro guide |
One caution applies to both: shorter schedules mean faster height gain. On Mount Kenya, a 3-day Naro Moru plan is for people who are already acclimatized and experienced.

Trekking summit or technical climb
Mount Kenya has two kinds of summit goals. Kilimanjaro has one main goal for trekkers.
Point Lenana
The usual trekking goal. Summit day starts before dawn, crosses frozen scree and ends with a short scramble. It is a high-altitude walk, not a stroll.
Point Lenana →Batian and Nelion
Technical rock climbs. Batian is the highest point, and the easiest main-summit lines are UIAA grade IV. Not a trekking peak.
Batian and Nelion →Uhuru Peak
The top of Kilimanjaro and the goal of most Kilimanjaro treks. The routes, huts and costs are on the Kilimanjaro site.
Kilimanjaro routesWhich climb suits you?
A short guide by type of traveler.
| You are | Consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A trekker who wants rocky peaks, tarns and moorland | Mount Kenya, Point Lenana | The route passes mountain valleys and gives views of Batian and Nelion |
| A trekker set on the highest point | Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak | 5,895 m, the higher summit |
| An experienced rock climber | Mount Kenya, Batian or Nelion | Technical routes that need climbing skills and experience |
| Someone with 4 to 6 days | Mount Kenya via Sirimon and Chogoria | A 5-day crossing is a common plan, with an extra acclimatization night at Shipton's |
For most first-time trekkers who want a scenic high-altitude walk, Point Lenana is a strong choice. If the number on the summit sign matters most, choose Kilimanjaro. There is no general ranking of difficulty, price or crowds that holds for every date and operator.

Altitude and acclimatization on either mountain
The height that decides your comfort is the height you sleep at.
Sleep height
Above 3,000 m, medical guidance advises sleeping no more than about 500 m higher each night, with an extra rest day for every 1,000 m gained. This is general advice for any high mountain.
Warning signs
Headache with nausea, tiredness or dizziness after gaining height may be altitude sickness. Do not go higher, and descend if it gets worse. Breathlessness at rest or poor coordination can signal an emergency.
Rescue and insurance
Rescue on Mount Kenya relies on park rangers and volunteers, with helicopter rescue only where there is a flat landing spot. Check that your insurance covers trekking at altitude and rescue.
Point Lenana →These points apply to both mountains and to any plan that is shorter than the guidance suggests. A longer schedule on Mount Kenya costs more days, but it also gives your body time to adapt.
