Batian and Nelion: the two highest peaks
Batian rises to 5,199 m and Nelion to 5,188 m. Together they form the rocky twin summit of Mount Kenya, and Batian is the highest point in Kenya. Both are technical climbing summits. They are reached by rope climbing on rock, not by walking, and they belong to people with climbing experience.
If you want a summit without ropes, the walkers' goal is Point Lenana at 4,985 m. A guided Mount Kenya trek reaches it in several days, and the peak looks across to Batian and Nelion. Treat the two climbing summits as a different type of trip with different preparation.

The three summits compared
Heights and type of ascent.
| Summit | Height | Type of ascent | Standard route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Batian | 5,199 m | Technical rock climbing | North Face Standard Route |
| Nelion | 5,188 m | Technical rock climbing | Normal Route via the south-east face and ridge |
| Point Lenana | 4,985 m | Trekking with a scramble at the end | From Shipton's, Mackinder's or Hall Tarns |
The Normal Route on Nelion is not the same line as the historic first ascent of Batian. For most visitors, the right choice is Point Lenana. Choose Batian or Nelion only if you already climb, or if you book with a climbing guide who checks your experience.
Our pick: see Batian and Nelion from Shipton's
No tour here climbs Batian or Nelion, which need technical climbing skills. This four-day trek takes you to Point Lenana and past a camp with a clear view of both peaks.

Nelion: the second peak
A rock summit with a high bivouac.
Nelion is the lower of the two summits by 11 m and is reached by the Normal Route over the south-east face and ridge. A bivouac hut called the Howell Hut stands on the summit at 5,188 m and dates from 1970. Whether it can be used, how many people it holds and how to book it today are questions for a climbing guide, so do not plan on a free bed.
The easiest lines on the main summits are graded UIAA IV. That grade does not apply to every route or every year, so treat it as a rough guide to rock difficulty, not a promise.
Batian Peak: the highest point
The summit of Kenya.
The standard line to the top of Batian is the North Face Standard Route. The Austrian Hut lies in the upper summit area. Rescue on these routes is difficult. Rangers and volunteers help where they can, and helicopters need flat landing sites, so a quick rescue is not guaranteed.
Check that your insurance covers technical climbing at this height, search and air rescue. The park asks all visitors to be accompanied by a qualified guide, and a climbing guide is the sensible choice here.
The first ascents
1899 and 1929.
Batian was first climbed in 1899 by Halford Mackinder with César Ollier and Josef Brocherel. Nelion followed in 1929 by Eric Shipton and Percy Wyn-Harris.
The mountain was known to local communities long before these climbs. Our Mount Kenya history page covers the Kikuyu, Embu and Meru names and the European exploration.

Who should attempt the climbing summits
Skills first, height second.
Batian and Nelion call for rope work, route finding on rock and the ability to climb at about 5,000 m. A trekking trip to Point Lenana is a good way to test how your body copes with height, but it does not teach climbing. Build your rock and altitude experience on other mountains first, and use a guide who is qualified to lead technical routes.
Allow extra days for acclimatisation before any climb, and keep the same sleeping-height rules as for trekking: no more than 500 m of extra sleeping height per night above 3,000 m, and a rest day for every 1,000 m.
Conditions and season
Rock, ice and weather.
Climbing season
Rock climbing suits the south side from the end of December to mid-March and on the north side from the end of June to mid-October. There is no weather guarantee in any month.
Retreating ice
As the glaciers shrink, the terrain on these routes becomes looser. Old routes on ice should not be treated as regular lines today. Our glaciers page explains the retreat.
Fees
Park entry for non-residents is $70 per adult per day in 2026, and public camping is $20 per adult per night. The park fees page has the full tariff.
